EDUCATION

JACOB'S VISION ON

Education is a direct pathway to success and economic upward mobility. Education is a human right and we should ensure that every resident has access. There should be a hyperfocus on increasing funding for schools which includes adequate pay for teachers and staff, educational tools for students, and safe learning environments. Every child should have access to early education (i.e pre-K). It is in the early years that the building blocks of learning are created. I acknowledge that it is the absence of early education for many students that result in lasting educational gaps.

We acknowledge that traditional education is not for everyone. We should work to support schools that offer vocational training as fervently as we support traditional education. The Boston Public School system is the heart of public education in Boston. As we build and improve on the current public school system, we must also be open to supporting families who chose to use a separate path to education (i.e charter schools).

Students oftentimes end up on a downward trajectory, when the school system does not offer them appropriate support. This is a direct contribution to the school-to-prison pipeline. It is important to amplify the voices of students, teachers, parents, and providers to explore the intersection of trauma, race, socioeconomic status, and education.

I will:

  • Support the increase of funding for schools to ensure that every student is afforded an adequate and competitive education, that every teacher and staff is received a living wage, and school buildings/facilities are safe and conducive to learning.

  • Work to amplify the voices of students, teachers, parents, and providers to explore the intersection of trauma, race, socioeconomic status, and education in order to dismantle the school-to-prison pipeline.

  • Support access to universal kindergarten and early education in order to ensure all children are afforded the opportunity.

  • Work to support schools that offer vocational training as fervently as we support traditional forms of education.

  • Support the elimination of BRIC and the severing of ties between BPS, BPD, and ICE in order to ensure that all of our students feel safe and welcome at school.

  • Support and advocate for the increase of influence given to the student body and work closely with youth leaders to address any issues they may face effectively.
